shooting.
"A man taken into custody this morning in Altoona, Pennsylvania, has
been identified as Luigi Nicholas Mangione," NYPD Chief of Detectives
Joseph Kenny announced at a Monday afternoon news conference. "He has
connections to San Francisco, California, and his most recent known address was
in Honolulu, Hawaii. He has no prior arrest record in New York."
Connections to Maryland
Luigi Mangione, the valedictorian of Gilman School's Class of 2016, holds
both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.
His family owns Turf Valley and Hayfields Country Club, as confirmed by NBC
News.
In a letter shared with 11 News, Gilman’s head of school, Henry Smyth,
addressed the community:
"We have recently learned that Luigi Mangione, a Gilman alumnus from
the Class of 2016, has been arrested in connection with the killing of the
UnitedHealthcare CEO. Beyond what has been reported in the news, we have no
additional information.
This is deeply troubling news, compounding an already tragic situation. Our
thoughts are with everyone affected.
Here on campus, we remain committed to supporting and educating our students
during this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding."
Luigi Mangione is a cousin of Baltimore County Delegate Nino Mangione,
R-District 42A, as confirmed by the lawmaker's office.
Currently in custody in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Mangione was found with a
firearm believed to match the one used in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO
Brian Thompson, according to the NYPD.
Tip Leads Authorities to Pennsylvania
Luigi Mangione was apprehended after a tip alerted police to his presence at
a McDonald's in Pennsylvania, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed during a
news conference.
"They also recovered clothing, including a mask similar to the one worn
by the suspect we're searching for," Tisch said. "Additionally, they
found a fake New Jersey ID that matches the one our suspect used to check into
a New York City hostel before the shooting."
According to a law enforcement official, The Associated Press reported that,
in addition to the gun, authorities recovered a silencer, fake IDs, and
writings that seemed to criticize the health insurance industry.
The NYPD is sending detectives to Pennsylvania to interrogate the individual
now in custody.
Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot on Wednesday in what police described
as a "brazen, targeted" attack while he was walking alone to the
Hilton from a nearby hotel, where UnitedHealthcare’s parent company,
UnitedHealth Group, was hosting its annual investor conference.
