The latest iPhone update is here, packed with exciting new features—and right on schedule, as predicted. “Today is a monumental day for Apple,” CEO Tim Cook shared during an interview in London earlier today. He was highlighting the launch of iOS 18.2, introducing the next wave of Apple Intelligence enhancements.
For users in the U.K. and select regions, this update is particularly
significant, as Apple Intelligence wasn’t included in iOS 18.1. “You’re
getting the full experience all at once,” Cook noted during our conversation.
“I always love visiting the U.K., but being here on this day makes it even
more special.”
The update is a sizable download and has already started rolling out.
Installing it soon may help you avoid the rush, but be prepared for some
waiting as demand is high. Here’s what’s included and how to get it—plus,
there’s an unexpected surprise that nobody saw coming. Let’s dive into that
first.
The Unexpected Bonus
Previously, Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18.1 and image features in the
iOS 18.2 beta required users to join a waitlist, and the process wasn't always
fast. The great news now is that there’s no waitlist for the new features in
iOS 18.2.
Which iPhones Are Compatible with iOS 18.2?
As with previous versions of iOS 18, any iPhone that supports iOS 17 can also
run iOS 18.2. This includes the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, and iPhone Xr from
2018, as well as all newer models, including the second- and third-generation
iPhone SE.
The major highlight of this release is that Apple Intelligence and certain
features of the upgrade are only compatible with last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and
Pro Max, along with the entire iPhone 16 lineup from this year.
How to Install It
Open the Settings app, go to General, then tap Software Update. From there,
click Download and Install, and let the software do its thing. This is a large
update, over 7GB on my iPhone 16 Pro Max.

What's Included in the Release
For U.S. users, this update brings the second and most significant batch of
Apple Intelligence features. For the first time, Apple Intelligence is also
available to English speakers in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, South
Africa, and Canada. For these users, this release is a game-changer, as it
combines the Apple Intelligence features from both iOS 18.1 and iOS 18.2 into
one major update.
One of the standout new arrivals in Apple Intelligence is
Image Playground, an app that creates images based on
descriptions, concepts, or people in your Photos. It currently offers two
styles—animation and illustration—with a third style coming soon.
Genmoji is another exciting feature, allowing users to
generate a brand-new emoji from a text prompt. Image Wand,
integrated into the Notes app, enables you to transform sketches into refined
images.
ChatGPT can now be accessed through Siri or Writing Tools, allowing up to 30 daily requests without the need for a ChatGPT account.
Writing Tools have been enhanced from iOS 18.1, now offering
deeper nuance in summarization and proofreading, including better detection of
tone and intent. You can even generate content from scratch using ChatGPT.
Visual Intelligence gives iPhone 16 series users the ability
to press the Camera Control button and get information about what the camera
is focused on.
The Mail app introduces new categorization features, adding
more organization options.
In addition to the Apple Intelligence features, all iOS 18-compatible iPhones
get enhancements like improved Photos, the ability to add
vocals to existing audio in Voice Memos,
natural language search in apps like Apple Music, and
Sudoku puzzles in Apple News for News+ subscribers.
